Field TRIP

Fourth Grade Standards 4.2 requires students to learn about the Early Exploration of California – Students describe the social, political, cultural and economic life and interactions among people of California from the pre-Columbian societies to the Spanish mission and Mexican rancho periods.

Tuesday, October 27th, is our field trip to Mission San Juan Capistrano.  We will be boarding the school bus at 9:30 am and headed to the downtown Amtrak station.  There, we are scheduled to board train #573 that departs at 10:42 am.  We will arrive at the San Juan Capistrano Station at 12:18 pm.  We will walk the two blocks to the Mission and tour the exhibits.  Then, we will walk back to the station to board train #580 at 4:12 pm.  We will arrive back at the downtown station at 5:47 pm.  We will again board the school buses at that time and return back to Hedenkamp at approximately 6:30 p.m.  Please be at Hedenkamp to pick up your child at that time.  We will not let students walk home in the dark.  You can call Amtrak’s automated phone system to check on train schedules.  The number is 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7234).  In the event of a late arrival due to traffic, teachers will send out a message via Class Blog or Class Dojo.

If you are interested in attending but were not selected as a chaperone, you can still attend on your own.  You will have to purchase your ticket on your own (www.amtrak.com) and drive yourself to the train station.  If you plan on doing this, please email me so that I can assign you a group of students to chaperone (Magdalena.toral@cvesd.org).  All parents are welcomed!

Students will need to bring all of their own food, snacks, and drinks for the day.  The best way to do this is to have each student with a backpack or small bag to carry throughout the day.  Inside their backpack they should have:

*Scavenger Hunt packet, pencil, white paper, & colored pencils (all packed from class)

*HEALTHY food, drinks, and snacks for the day. You may want to pack an extra meal for the ride back. (We’ll be eating on the train rides.)

*Jacket for questionable weather

*Small game (ex: deck of cards, Brainquest cards, DS, GameBoy) that they can use to pass some of the time during travel.  Any items brought from home should be clearly marked with your child’s name and is 100% their responsibility.

  • Students are allowed to bring their cell phones or a camera for pictures.

Parent volunteers are to be at school by 9:15 am and be prepared with the same essentials as the students.  We are excited about this adventure and introduction to our unit about the California Missions!  Please contact me if you have any other questions.
