California Young Reader Medal Committee

Message from Mrs. Camarena:

Last month, the California Young Reader Medal Committee reached out to all school library staff throughout San Diego County.  They asked those of us who participated in the CYRM program for a description of how we presented the stories, which categories we focused on, and the number of students who voted.

I am pleased to announce that the CYRM Committee has selected Hedenkamp to represent all elementary schools in San Diego County at next year’s California School Library Association (CSLA) banquet.  That is where the winning authors will be recognized, and it is taking place in San Diego on February 6.

I have been asked by the Committee to select an upper grade student to introduce Audrey Vernick at the banquet.  She is the winner of the “Best Picture Book for Older Readers” category for Brothers at Bat (one of the three stories that I highlighted last year and who the majority of our upper grade students voted for).

I would like to give all interested students an opportunity to submit a speech.   However, there are some guidelines for students to qualify:

1 – They must have attended Hedenkamp during the 2014-15 school year (as a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader)

2 – They were present during the story and my lesson for Brothers at Bat

3 – they voted for Brothers at Bat

The speech should be approximately 5 minutes long.

Criteria to include:

1 – a description of when they first heard/read the book

2 – how the book affected them (how they connected with the book)

3 – why they voted for the book to win the Medal

4 – interesting facts about the author

Remember, this is the speech that will be introducing Ms. Vernick at the banquet.  Although it is optional, please encourage your students to participate.  I will also encourage them during their next library visit.  The deadline to submit their speeches will be Wednesday, Nov. 18.  Please turn all speeches into my box.  Mr. Hanks, Mrs. Mazeau, Mrs. Rose and I will review all of the speeches, and select a student to represent our school some time in December.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
September 15 – October 15, 2015

Mes de la Herencia Hispana

SER-LATINO celebrando2_1.inline vertical

We will start off by taking a little time to learn about National Hispanic Heritage month and research to appreciate some accomplishments of hispanics throughout history.  We will start off by learning about one of world’s most respected civil rights leader of the 20th century:  Cesar Chavez.

We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens this community – and this nation.

Students must have initiative; they should not be mere imitators. They must learn to think and act for themselves – and be free.
